Everyday I am confronted with media images of a war that is taking place not that far away but seems like on a different planet, remote from my peaceful daily life. I try to imagine how terrifying and difficult life must be for many of these women and children. In a similar context to a quote by Susan Sonntag about Walter Benjamin,“The main work consisted in tearing fragments out of the context and arranging them afresh in such a way that they illustrated one another and were able to prove their raison d`etre in a free-floating state as it were” (Susan Sonntag, Introduction Illuminations, Walter Benjamin) I have pieced images together in order through the act of painting and concentrating on these images to portray a deeper empathy for these women's lives.
